Today we share 2024 invited exhibitor Barry Atherton's portrait titled; 'Irina in a White Silk Dress'!#CallForEntries: Applications are NOW OPEN for our Annual Exhibition 2025!The Society welcomes paintings, drawings and original prints from artists aged 18 and over, in the UK and internationally.🏆 As well as an amazing prize fund of £30,000, artists will have the opportunity to sell their work, and build relationships with collectors and commissioners.Submission deadline: Tuesday 4 February 2025, 12 noon.Eligibility:• Any artist over 18 may submit.• British & International artists are welcome to submit. You do not need to live in the UK to submit your work.• Works should be based on a sitting or study of the human figure from life. We understand that artists may use photographs for assistance but the primary source should be from life.• Work must have been completed in the last three years and not been exhibited inLondon previously."One of the factors which makes this Annual Exhibition special is that it is selected exclusively by practising painters. Any artist aged 18 or over may enter, from anywhere in the world. 🏆There is a total prize fund of £30,000, including The RP Prize for the Best Small Portrait...Hear from non-member exhibitor Florence Yuqing who won the RP Prize for the Best Small Portrait 2024 below!"In 2024, I had the honour of winning The RP Prize for the Best Small Portrait at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters’ annual exhibition. This is the first time I have received a prize from the RP since I began exhibiting with them in 2022 and continued in 2023 and 2024. When I received the news from the RP team, I was thrilled, deeply grateful, and proud. As a watercolour painter, being awarded a portrait prize from such a long-established and respected organisation is a significant milestone in my artistic journey, and a true affirmation of my work that has given me even greater confidence.This recognition is immensely encouraging, and while I always look forward to entering their annual exhibition, this award has motivated me to be even more productive, knowing my work resonates with others and is appreciated by experts in portraiture. I am now working on new portrait projects with the hope of entering again in 2025. Recently, I’ve been focusing on creating imaginary characters, as seen in my award-winning piece, Last Letter from Me, and I aim to challenge myself further by exploring new directions.If you are a portrait artist, I encourage you to apply to the RP’s annual exhibition. Happy start to Christmas month from us all at RP!We wanted to refresh your memories and take you back to where it all began...#Monthlyhistory:In 1891 A committee comprising Archibald John Stuart-Wortley (chairman), James Jebusa Shannon, George Percy Jacomb-Hood, Arthur Melville, and Hon. John Collier carried a proposal to form a Society of Portrait Painters. Wortley was its first President and its first exhibition was deemed a critical success.The catalogue of the exhibition shows that its committee then consisted of Archibald Stuart-Wortley (Chairman), Hon. John Collier, Arthur Hacker, G. P. Jacomb-Hood, S.J. Solomon, James Jebusa Shannon, and Hubert Vos. The other members listed were Percy Bigland, C. A. Furse, Glazebrook, John McLure Hamilton, Heywood Hardy, Hubert von Herkomer, Henry J. Hudson, Louise Jopling, T. B. Kennington, W. Llewellyn, W. M. Loudan, Arthur Melville, Anna Lea Merritt, F. M. Skipworth, Mrs. Annie Swynnerton, W. R. Symonds, Mary Waller, Edwin A. Ward, Leslie Ward (better known as “Spy”), and T. Blake Wirgman.In 1892 The second exhibition was considered to surpass the first with works by John Everett Millais, Frederick Leighton, and members of the Glasgow School, John Lavery, and James Guthrie.G F Watts, Alma Tadema, and James McNeill Whistler were also made members.In 1893 John Singer Sargent was established at the forefront of their rank. An annual exhibition launched in the newly opened Grafton Galleries in New Bond St.In 1902 The Athenaeum magazine wrote ‘the mere fact that Mr. Watts contributes some of the work of his prime, raises the exhibition above the ordinary level of contemporary shows’In 1911 In its 21st year the society gained Royal patronage from King George V, becoming the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (RP).
