#Annualexhibition2026:Our next Annual exhibition is here, displaying the most tasteful portraits.Today we share non-member Luke Thompson exhibiting portrait... "Here is a portrait of the artist Jacquie Denby. The red garment she is wearing is handmade by textile artist Joan Murray, and the sitting took place in Joan's studio. The painting is about the informal quality of the pose and the shapes created within the intimate interior space, in search for a quietness against the intensity of the colour. I was also drawn to the sensitivity of the expression, aiming to capture her while lost in thought during deep but calm conversation. Through the diligent development of the layers, I searched for the physicality and living human within the medium of oil paint that the viewer can engage with." -Luke ThompsonThis year our Annual Exhibition will also be presenting the following prizes and awards worth 41k:-The William Lock Portrait Prize-NEW The Faringdon Prize-NEW The Almenara Collection Award-NEW Daler-Rowney Materials Prize-The de Laszlo Foundation Award-The RP Prize for the Best Small Portrait-The Raw Umber Studios PrizeWe also have an amazing events programme - view it via the link in our bio or website: www.therp.co.uk When?7 May – 19 May, (closed to the public all day 12 May)Open 10am to 5pm otherwise @mallgalleries!Image: Luke Thompson, 'Jacquie in Red'@lukethompson_art ... #Annualexhibition2026:Our Annual Exhibition is back displaying 89 works by non-members and a range from members! You won't want to miss this glowing show blending both national and international submissions.RP Toby Wiggins kindly shared some words on his one of his exhibiting portraits below..."Ronald sat for me in his study, at the top of narrow stairs, his back to a low mullioned window overlooking the garden and illuminating his antiquated typewriter; a hand-me-down from friend and later biographer Ian Collins. He had worked at this table for almost 40 years. He told me that time was precious and you needed lots of it to yourself for writing as well as ‘just a few close and trusted friends’.Ronald spoke with great affection of friends John and Christine Nash. He gifted me a dip pen from a box of John’s paraphernalia. After hearing of his death aged 100 on the radio in 2023, I read his final publication ‘Next to Nature; a lifetime in the English Countryside’ (John Murray 2022) and duly unearthed the sketches from 2008 and began work on this final posthumous portrait.“Not for us covetous desires and inordinate love of riches. Nor for us inordinate affection, although quite how one is to keep this within bounds I have failed to understand. Some friends, the cat, some books, this landscape familiar to me since boyhood, are all in receipt of my inordinate affection and the cat would not be pleased with anything less. But if I am not covetous, it is because I have all I need.”"-Toby wiggins RPWhen?7 May – 19 May, (closed to the public all day 12 May)Open 10am to 5pm otherwise @mallgalleries!
