Mr Heatherleys prize
Congratulations to Sara Edison who has won this year’s Mr Heatherly Composition Prize! The annual award was initiated by former Principal of Heatherleys, John Walton RP, for the best three-figure portrait painting.
The award is now sponsored by The Royal Society of Portrait Painters. The competition is based upon the Slade composition prize which John won himself in his youth.
Sara Edison comment about her work and award:
“I am so thrilled to have been awarded by you and The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Mr Heatherleys Portrait prize. I was amazed to be chosen by James Hague RP, to receive this very generous award. The title of the paining is ‘The Boys’, and was painted this summer, August 2022. It’s dimensions are 48” by 36” and is oil paint on cotton canvas.
The painting is of my three sons, outside, on a warm sunny day in August. One of the sons has left home and this is depicted by the space between them. He is leaning in to illustrate he is still part of the close knit family. The forget-me-not next to him, is to remind him to keep in touch, and a reference to me being a Botanical Illustrator. Thank you again for this opportunity, if you need any more information or images, I will be happy to provide them.“
