On the occasion of Annie Leibovitz’s amazing photographic portraits of the King & Queen of Spain, Carlos del Amor for RTVE takes us through a tour of Velazquez and Goya at The Prado Museum, with chief curator Alejandro Vergara. The report includes Estela de Castro’s photographic portraits of the King Felipe and Queen Letizia, Antonio Lopez Garcia’s portrait of the Spanish Royal Family, Jonathan Yeo’s recent portrait of King Charles III and my portrait of Queen Elizabeth II

Today we share another snippet (two) from our Annual Exhibition selection process.This is quite possibly our most important day of the year, where we physically view the works that have made it through the first digital round of our exhibition open entry system... don’t miss out on the chance of getting your works to this stage and finally, into exhibition @mallgalleries! The total prize fund this year is £30,000, including The William Lock Portrait Prize of £20,000.“One of the factors which makes this Annual Exhibition special is that it is selected exclusively by practising painters. They know what they’re looking at and so inclusion in the show is a truly meaningful accolade.” -Anthony Connolly PRPEligibility:• Any artist over 18 may submit.• British & International artists are welcome to submit. You do not need to live in the UK to submit your work.• Works should be based on a sitting or study of the human figure from life. #Monthlyhistory: (pt.2)1920 The Grafton Gallery lease expired and the RP moved between the Royal Academy and the R.B.A Galleries for some years before finding a permanent home at The Royal Institute Galleries in Piccadilly, until these were bombed in 1940.1923 The President and founding member, J.J. Shannon died and was replaced by William Orpen, a President remembered for his magnanimity in instantly writing a cheque to settle the Society’s debts. Orpen was replaced on his death by Lavery, in 1931. During the years that followed such luminaries as Laura Knight, Augustus John, Alfred Munnings among others became members and exhibited with the Society, innovating and propelling it in new directions.1941 The Society announced a permanent Gallery at 6 ½, Suffolk St, Pall Mall East, London SW1, where the painters’ work could be seen at any time of year1961 The RP became a founder member of the Federation of British Artists (FBA)1971 The FBA moves to the Mall Galleries in London1984 It was announced by the society ‘The President and members have the honour to announce that Her Majesty the Queen has been graciously pleased to grant Her Patronage to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.’1986-7 The RP was incorporated as a private limited company and also became a Registered Charity, overseen by John Walton RP.2024 It was with great honour, announced by the President of the society that King Charles III has granted His Patronage to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
