CHARLES CECIL STUDIOS, 2015-2020
Trained with Charles Cecil for five years, drawing and painting the human figure using the sight-size method. This type of training – painting from life to the scale of life – facilitates observation and reflection and strives to emulate the technique of great artists such as Velázquez and Sargent. Portraits are rendered without recourse to photography or artificial lighting. Repeatedly viewing the subject and its representation at a distance, the artist moves forward to add or make adjustments to the paper or canvas and then back for the desired perspective. The portraits, as a consequence, at close range border on impressionistic but gain clarity and strength when viewed from afar, ultimately baring a strong likeness to the models themselves.
MATHEW JAMES COLLINS ATELIER, 2016-2020
