#AntonyWilliams on painting H.M The Queen:

‘My approach to painting The Queen was to paint Her Majesty in the same way that I would tackle any other portrait, in working from intense observation of the subject, which can often produce as a result a heightened sense of realism.’

Antony Williams trained at Farnham College of Art and Portsmouth University in the UK. He works almost exclusively in egg tempera which can be a painstaking and exacting medium, but which allows him to express a deep feeling about the look of the world. All of his work is based on direct and intense observation, where every surface detail is given almost equal and constant consideration.

Mark Roscoe (@markroscoeart) recently completed th Mark Roscoe (@markroscoeart) recently completed this portrait of Lady Paton. He told us a bit more about painting Lady Paton and his process behind the commission: "This is my portrait of Ann Paton. Lady Paton is an advocate and currently Scotland's longest-serving female judge. I received this commission after completing a portrait of her alongside 32 other members of the Faculty of advocates back in 2015. Ann is a very warm and compassionate person and it was very easy to spend time with her, often during sittings I forgot that I was there to do a job. I found this easy going nature to be in contrast to her formidable courtroom reputation and I tried to capture this contrast in her portrait." Royal Society of Portrait Painters
In this first major study of the work of the painter John Wonnacott (b.1940), Charles Saumarez Smith has surveyed a body of work produced at a tangent to the orthodoxies of modernism. Exploring the artist's formative experiences at the Slade, which connected him with artists such as Frank Auerbach and Michael Andrews and the School of London more broadly, Saumarez Smith roots Wonnacott's approach in his commitment to the discipline of drawing, his acute skills in observational analysis and the mechanics of graphic invention that makes his visual response to the world so memorable. Alongside commissioned portraits created in the grandest of architectural spaces, from naval bases to the Painted Hall at Greenwich and including John Major in 10 Downing Street and the Royal Family in Buckingham Palace, he has produced a revealing diary of self-portraits stretching back from his early teens and landscape paintings of light and sky which are celebrations of his native Essex coastline. In presenting the full range of Wonnacott's impressive oeuvre, the scope of the artist's remarkable achievement is revealed. The figurative painter's remarkable achievement is given fresh, and deserved, focus in Charles Saumarez Smith's new book which will be released on 5 September!
