ABOUT ALASTAIR

Alastair has been painting portraits since the mid 1990’s and has established a strong reputation internationally as a commissioned portrait artist. His natural and unassuming approach to portraiture has earned him many high-profile commissions including from the National Portrait Gallery to paint Tony Blair for their Primary Collection.

After becoming a member of the RP in 2002, Alastair became Treasurer in 2005 and in 2008 was made President. In 2022 he returned to the role of Treasurer and is also currently serving a Trustee of the Federation of British Artists.

Alastair has held a research-based position as Programme Director for the Graphic Communication and Illustration Degree Course at Loughborough University. In addition to academic conference presentations and guest lectures he has acted as an external examiner for both the Art Academy and Heatherley’s School of Art in London. In 2022, he was made an Associate Fellow of Berkeley College, Yale, USA.


At the core of Alastair’s portraiture is an incisive, observationally centred drawing and painting language. His ability to not only capture a likeness but also the look and manner of his subjects has enabled him to earn the friendship and favour of many institutions and individuals in the UK, Europe and America.

METHOD OF WORKING
Alastair likes to work from life when possible whilst also making use of photography to reduce sitting times. He will usually travel to the sitter’s location and has worked nationally and internationally.
