ABOUT JOSEPH GALVIN

Born Wales 1976. I studied Art Foundation at Carmarthen, and graduated with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art from Canterbury school of Art (KIAD) in 2000. After graduating I continued to develop an art practice with drawing from direct observation at its core. With a strong interest in the human form, portraiture became a natural subject. In 2007 I was awarded the first Bulldog Portrait bursary from the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, and have been painting portraits professionally since.

Recent Commissions have included the Past Vice Chancellor of the University of Wales, Professor Marc Clement, and Past Chairman of the Bulldog Trust, Richard Hoare.

METHOD OF WORKING

Working from life is my preferred method of painting, as it allows for all the benefits of direct interaction with the sitter throughout the painting process, leading to a truly collaborative approach. I will also happily work from photos & drawings when multiple sittings can be impractical, or if the composition requires a different approach.

I’m always happy to travel. Painting can take place at the sitters home, or at my studio in Cardiff.
3 to 5 sittings are what I usually require when working from life.
